Powertrains
The WRX uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder engine that makes 278 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. This robust output is sent through Subaru’s standard all-wheel-drive system, which gives the WRX an advantage in poor weather or low-traction conditions. Meanwhile, the BRZ relies on a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer-style four-cylinder engine. Although it produces less overall power than the WRX—228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque—the delivery is consistent and predictable. Rear-wheel drive is standard, reinforcing the BRZ’s focus on balance and driver control rather than all-weather traction.
Both cars can be had with a manual or an automatic, depending on the trim, but they don’t deliver the same experience. In the WRX, the manual pairs well with the turbocharged engine’s torque, while the Subaru Performance automatic, standard with the GT and optional on the Limited, makes the car easier to live with in traffic-heavy driving. In the BRZ, the manual is a more natural fit for some. This gearbox gives drivers direct control over how the engine builds power and works well with the car’s lighter and more responsive character. A six-speed automatic is offered with the BRZ Limited for owners who prefer convenience over row-your-own gears.
